"Fluoride is an industrial waste chemical that has been deceivingly and incorrectly called "fluoride". It is inorganic, very toxic, and more poisonous than lead. Even the U.S. FDA has now regarded fluoride in toothpaste as a potential toxic drug. One of the most common symptoms of excess fluoride is “dental fluorosis”. You will see chalky white patches on the teeth making your teeth “spotty”. Enamels can also become more porous with constant use of fluoridated toothpaste. Advanced cases will even show discoloration of the teeth or in severe cases, pitting of the enamel. Swallowing half a tube of toothpaste can even kill a child !! The absorption of Fluoride is cancerous and will lead to increased hip fractures, osteoporosis, arthritis and even brain damage. Another harmful ingredient in toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which is just a foam-building substance which is unnecessary. It is an industrial degreaser that may even be cancer-causing"
Hmmm, after reading that I was like... Really! This can't be true surely. When you look on the package of brands like Colgate-Palmolive toothpaste, which is popularly claimed of this danger, it only contains 1000ppm of fluoride, and also mentions safety instructions clearly on their packaging.
- Children under 6 years of age should have adult supervision and use only a pea sized amount.
- Do not swallow.
So is fluoride really harmful to us then? I've been using the Colgate brand since I was a nipper and have had no side affects that I know of other than it made me gag every time I brushed my teeth with the stuff. I know it's a little late in the day to start changing toothpaste brands just because it has fluoride but I did it anyway as I'm trying to live this healthy lifestyle and trying to stay away from chemicals and toxic ingredients.
So I decided to purchase Sarakan Toothpaste . Sarakan toothpaste was first developed 40 years ago by a British army doctor serving in India. He noticed that the Indian people seemed to have really good teeth and gums despite their generally low quality of nutrition. They would chew on sticks from a shrub called Salvadora persica, or the "toothbrush tree." This plant is widespread throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia and is well known for its powerful antiseptic and curative properties. Its an healthy alternative to these regular toothpastes and has various health benefits. It's made from the extract of Salvadora persica and flavoured with peppermint, clove and geranium.
My hubby was pretty impressed when using it for the first time and wasn't phased that it didn't foam up... All he cared about was as long as it cleaned his teeth and was getting the same benefits as he would with using a fluoride toothpaste, and that it left his teeth feeling clean and breath smelling fresh then was happy. So it was a winner.... :-)
