Bootcamp Pilates - Your Total Body Conditioning Workout

I attended my first ever Pilates class at Bootcamp Pilates many thanks to Laura Kettle who arranged for me to attend for a review on my blog. The studio is based at Peerless Street near Old Street Station, and they also have studios at Notting Hill (Bayswater), Fulham & Richmond.

The History of Pilates
Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates, a physical-culturist from Germany. During the first half of the 20th century, he developed a system of exercises which were intended to strengthen the human mind and body. Pilates believed that mental and physical health are interrelated.

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that may help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips and back. It put emphasis on spinal and pelvis alignment, breathing and developing a strong core or centre, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercise to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

The Reformer

The colour-coded springs provide the tension for your workout and really are easy to deal with; your trainer will always explain which springs you need and give a clear description of each exercise. The straps allow a multitude of exercises to be performed and the smooth glide of the carriage helps to achieve a controlled workout.

I was a little scared at what I was looking at and was thinking (God Help Me). The trainer Ivo Ducros set me up and we got on our way with numerous core strength exercises. It was hard to say the least, within the first couple of minutes of using just the ring I was sweating, trying to keep my balance and my core engaged while doing a pelvic curl.

We then did some leg exercises, now I thought my legs were pretty strong but I felt like such a weakling. I seriously need to work on my legs more in the New Year. All the exercises performed used all aspects of the body nothing was left un-worked, Ivo really does put you through your paces. The exercises were very challenging but I could feel the benefit of each exercise and knew I was getting a really good workout.... I mean that was what I was there for.

The class lasted for an hour, I left feeling great and on a high. The next day my core was arching, my legs felt like bricks, my back, shoulders and arms were also in much pain. I'm seriously considered taking up pilates in addition to my regular classes or even in place of my regular classes for its amazing all over body conditioning workout.
