Beat the Winter Blues

Welcome back to the 4th instalment of Beating the Winter Blues - Winter Series, today's post is about prevention and fighting the flu and common cold.

Supporting our immune system during winter is a priority for winter wellness. Echinacea is usually taken once you have a cold but research has shown that it can also be taken preventatively.

Echinacea works in three ways: it supports the immune system and enhances the immune response only when needed, the combination of the root and herb when combined have a synergistic actions that reduces inflammation in the body, and its shown that it a very potent anti-viral activity, because the fresh extract is used.

I am a big fan of herbal remedies and when I ever come down with a cold, will always reach for my Echinacea as it works for me, and speeds up my recovery, I take it in capsule form from another brand, but recently had the pleasure in trying a couple products from the A.Vogel brand, they have a full range for you to choose from... from drops to tablets to throat spray. I just love the variety they offer... the A.Vogel Echinaforce Hot Drink is delicious, warming hug in a mug and made from black elderberry juice and the Echinacea Tincture drops you have to mix with a little water.

Echinacea can cut the chances of catching the common cold by 58 percent and reduce the duration of the common cold by almost one and a half days. That being said I have started to drink the hot drink for that reason, especially working in an open plan office where colleagues are coughing and sneezing.

It is not recommend to take Echinacea long-term as this can reduce the affects of it working, so taking it for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off is suggested.
